2022 Coastal Baseball Classic Review - Dominican Republic Survives Rain, Schedule Changes and a Three-Win Saturday to Claim the Championship
The 2022 Coastal Baseball Classic returned to Houston with an ambitious 10-team field and the expectation of building on the successful revival of the tournament one year earlier. Instead, the second year of the modern Coastal Classic became one of the most unusual tournaments in its history. Rain disrupted the opening weekend, several teams were forced to return to Houston a week later, and two of the original 10 teams could not complete the tournament because too many of their players had traveled from outside the Houston area. Through all of the disruption, the Dominican Republic emerged as the strongest team in the field, went undefeated and ultimately defeated USA Houston 6-3 to become the 2022 Coastal Baseball Classic champions.
The original field included the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, USA Houston, Cuba South, USA Austin, Mexico North, Venezuela and Nicaragua. The tournament was divided into three pools, giving the 2022 Classic its largest and most diverse field to that point in the modern era. Pool A included the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Pool B featured USA Houston, Cuba South, USA Austin and Mexico North, while Pool C consisted of Venezuela and Nicaragua. The final standings would eventually show the Dominican Republic at 4-0, USA Houston at 3-2, Cuba South at 2-2, Cuba and Mexico at 1-1, USA Austin and Mexico North at 1-2, Puerto Rico at 0-4, Venezuela at 1-0 and Nicaragua without a completed game.
Rain Changes the Entire Tournament
The 2022 Classic was supposed to be decided during its first weekend, but Houston weather changed everything. Games were played on January 7 before rain interrupted the schedule and prevented the tournament from being completed as planned. Instead of abandoning the event, the remaining games were moved to the following weekend, January 15 and 16, creating a situation in which teams had to keep their rosters together and return to Coastal Baseball Park a full week later.
That proved particularly difficult for Venezuela and Nicaragua. Both teams had relied heavily on players traveling into Houston, and once the tournament was postponed, too many of those players were unable to make the trip a second time. Venezuela had already opened its tournament with a convincing 9-1 victory over Puerto Rico, but the team could not continue the following weekend. Nicaragua faced an even more difficult situation and was unable to complete a tournament game after the schedule moved. The result was a 10-team tournament that began with three pools but ultimately had to continue without two of the teams originally expected to contend. Venezuela's only completed game remained the 9-1 victory over Puerto Rico, and the final standings list Venezuela at 1-0 while Nicaragua finished without a decision.
The rainout gave the second Coastal Classic a completely different character from the 2021 event. Teams that had expected to play one tournament weekend suddenly had to reconstruct pitching plans, contact players again and determine who would still be available seven days later. For some teams that was manageable. For Venezuela and Nicaragua, whose rosters depended on too many players coming from outside Houston, it was not.
The First Weekend Establishes the Field
Before the weather disrupted the tournament, several important games were completed on January 7. Venezuela's 9-1 win over Puerto Rico immediately established Venezuela as a dangerous team before circumstances prevented it from returning. Cuba defeated Mexico 7-2, while USA Houston recorded a 9-1 victory over another United States entry. Mexico North also earned an 8-0 victory during the opening schedule. Those games provided an early glimpse of what the tournament could have become had all 10 teams been able to return at full strength.
The week-long delay meant that the real championship race would begin when the tournament resumed on January 15. By then, every team remaining knew there would be no gradual path through the event. The schedule had become compressed, and anyone wanting to win the Coastal Baseball Classic would have to survive a demanding second weekend.
No team handled that challenge better than the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic Wins Three Games in One Day
Saturday, January 15, became the defining day of the entire 2022 Coastal Baseball Classic. The Dominican Republic did something rarely required in tournament baseball: it won three games in a single day. By the time Saturday ended, the Dominican team had gone from another contender in the field to the clear favorite to win the championship.
The day began at 8:30 AM against Mexico. The game was competitive, but the Dominican Republic came away with an 8-5 victory. It was only the beginning of an extraordinary day.
The Dominican Republic returned to the field later in the day against Cuba and survived a much tighter contest. Cuba had dominated Puerto Rico 14-3 earlier that morning and was capable of creating big offensive innings, but the Dominican Republic edged Cuba 4-3. The one-run victory kept the Dominican team perfect and put it in position to take complete control of Pool A.
There was still another game to play.
At 2:00 PM, the Dominican Republic faced Puerto Rico in its third game of the day. By that point, the Dominican roster had already played two complete games, used multiple pitchers and gone through its batting order repeatedly. Instead of wearing down, the Dominican Republic produced its biggest offensive performance of the day and defeated Puerto Rico 12-5.
Three games. Three victories. One day.
The Dominican Republic had beaten Mexico 8-5, Cuba 4-3 and Puerto Rico 12-5 in a matter of hours. The three victories gave the Dominican team a 3-0 record and control of Pool A. More importantly, they demonstrated the roster depth necessary to survive an event that had already been complicated by rain, postponements and player availability.
Victor Mercedes Carries the Dominican Offense
The player who best represented the Dominican Republic's offensive success was Victor Mercedes. Mercedes emerged as the outstanding hitter of the 2022 Coastal Baseball Classic and produced the best overall offensive score in the tournament statistics.
Mercedes played four games and went 7-for-12, finishing with a .583 batting average. He scored four runs and drove in nine, giving him more RBIs than games played. His seven hits included three doubles and a triple, meaning more than half of his hits went for extra bases. He also drew two walks and was hit by two pitches, producing a .643 on-base percentage. Mercedes finished with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a remarkable 1.643 OPS.
Those numbers made Mercedes the clear offensive centerpiece of the champions. His nine RBIs were particularly impressive considering the Dominican Republic played only four games. Mercedes consistently came to the plate with opportunities to produce runs and repeatedly delivered. He did not hit a home run, but his three doubles and triple gave the Dominican lineup extra-base production throughout the tournament.
Mercedes also demonstrated why tournament statistics can sometimes reveal a different type of offensive star than a traditional season. In a four-game sample there is almost no time to recover from a slow start. Mercedes never needed one. He hit immediately, reached base throughout the weekend and became the player around whom the Dominican Republic could build its offense.
The Tournament Had Other Outstanding Hitters
Mercedes was the tournament's leading hitter, but he was not alone in producing impressive offensive numbers. USA Houston's Josh Wells played five games and collected five hits while driving in five runs. Jose Fernandez of Cuba South hit .500 with five hits in 10 at-bats and scored four runs, while USA Austin's Anthony Ward hit .571 and collected three doubles in only seven at-bats.
Mexico's Xavier Salinas produced one of the highest batting averages in the tournament, going 4-for-5 for an .800 average with two doubles, three runs and a 2.033 OPS. USA Houston's Reed Seeley hit .571 and reached base at a .700 clip, while Ricky Ramirez of Mexico combined a triple and home run with a .500 batting average.
The difference was that Mercedes combined elite average, extra-base hitting and run production while playing every game for the eventual champions. His 32 hitter score was the highest in the tournament data, making him the statistical leader of the 2022 Classic and the natural choice as its top offensive player.
Dominican Pitching Survives the Demanding Schedule
Winning three games in one day required much more than offense. The Dominican Republic also had to find enough pitching to cover an enormous number of innings on Saturday and still have arms available for the championship round on Sunday.
Jender De Jesus earned a victory while posting a 1.68 ERA over 5 1/3 innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out six. Francisco Rodriguez also picked up a victory, completing five innings and striking out nine. Walby Hiraldo worked four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and earning another Dominican victory. The pitching workload was spread across several arms, allowing the Dominican Republic to survive Saturday without exhausting one pitcher.
That depth was critical. The Dominican Republic was not simply playing three short exhibition games. Every game counted toward advancement, and every pitching decision could affect what was available later in the day. By the time the Dominican team had completed its third win Saturday afternoon, it had proven that its roster was deeper than just Mercedes and the top of the batting order.
Strong Pitching Around the Rest of the Classic
Other teams also produced several of the tournament's best pitching performances. Cuba South's Jose Rodriguez went 2-0, completed both of his starts and worked 16 innings. He struck out 20 and finished with a 2.81 ERA. USA Houston's Keyshawn Reed was even more effective at preventing runs, going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA while completing both of his starts over 13 innings.
Venezuela's Jose Quintero made the most of the one game his team was able to play. Quintero threw a six-inning complete game, allowed only one hit and struck out 14 without allowing an earned run. His performance provided a glimpse of how dangerous Venezuela might have been had the rainout not prevented the team from returning the following weekend.
Mexico North also received an excellent outing from Mario Moralez, who threw five scoreless innings in a complete-game victory. Those performances reinforced the depth of pitching talent spread across the field, even though the unusual schedule prevented several teams from playing the number of games originally planned.
Sunday Becomes Championship Day
After the Dominican Republic's remarkable Saturday, the tournament moved into its final day on January 16. USA Houston defeated Mexico 5-2 in an early game, while another United States team defeated Cuba 12-2. Cuba also edged USA 7-6 in another matchup as the field worked its way toward the final.
The championship matchup ultimately placed USA Houston against the Dominican Republic. USA Houston had survived a difficult Pool B schedule and finished the tournament with three victories, while the Dominican Republic entered the final undefeated after its three-win Saturday.
For the Dominican Republic, the championship game represented the final test of roster depth. Less than 24 hours earlier, the team had played and won three times. Now it had to return to the field and defeat one of the strongest teams from the other pool.
The Dominican Republic did exactly that.
Dominican Republic Defeats USA Houston 6-3
The championship game was played at 2:00 PM on January 16, and the Dominican Republic defeated USA Houston 6-3 to complete a perfect tournament. The victory gave the Dominican Republic its fourth win and officially made the team the 2022 Coastal Baseball Classic champion.
The final standings reflected the dominance of the champions. The Dominican Republic finished 4-0, the only team in the tournament to complete multiple games without a loss. USA Houston finished 3-2, while Cuba South went 2-2. Cuba and Mexico each finished 1-1, USA Austin and Mexico North went 1-2, and Puerto Rico finished 0-4. Venezuela's 1-0 record and Nicaragua's absence from the final weekend remained reminders of how significantly the rainout had altered the original tournament structure.
A Championship Built on Survival
What separated the Dominican Republic was not simply that it had the tournament's best hitter. It was the team's ability to handle circumstances that were completely different from what anyone had expected when the tournament began. The Coastal Baseball Classic was interrupted by rain, pushed into another weekend and forced to continue without two of its original teams. Rosters changed, pitching plans changed and players who had expected one trip to Houston suddenly had to make another.
The Dominican Republic adapted better than anyone.
On January 15, it defeated Mexico in the morning, Cuba later in the day and Puerto Rico in the afternoon. On January 16, it came back and defeated USA Houston for the championship. Four victories in approximately two days of tournament play turned what had begun as a disrupted event into one of the most impressive championship runs in Coastal Baseball Classic history.
Mercedes was at the center of it. His .583 average, seven hits, four runs and nine RBIs gave the Dominican Republic a hitter who consistently changed games. Three doubles and a triple pushed his slugging percentage to 1.000, and his .643 on-base percentage meant opponents struggled to keep him off base in any fashion.
But the Dominican Republic also received enough pitching to survive three games in one day, enough depth to withstand the difficult schedule and enough remaining energy to win again the following afternoon. That combination made the team deserving champions.
The 2022 Classic Proves the Tournament Can Survive Adversity
The 2022 Coastal Baseball Classic was only the second tournament after the event had been revived in 2021, and it provided an immediate test of whether the Classic could survive adversity. A rainout could have ended the event. Losing Venezuela and Nicaragua could have damaged the remaining competition. Moving the tournament to another weekend could have caused additional teams to withdraw.
Instead, the Coastal Classic adjusted and finished the tournament. Eight teams returned and continued playing, the schedule was reorganized and a champion was determined on the field. That experience became part of the tournament's identity as it continued growing in later years.
The final image of the 2022 Classic was the Dominican Republic celebrating a championship after overcoming a schedule almost no team would choose voluntarily. The champions had played three times Saturday and once more Sunday, winning every game. Victor Mercedes had emerged as the tournament's best hitter, while the Dominican pitching staff found enough innings from several different arms to survive the most demanding schedule of the weekend.
The rain changed the tournament. Venezuela and Nicaragua were unable to return. The schedule became compressed and unpredictable. But when the Coastal Baseball Classic finally reached its conclusion, the best team remaining had gone undefeated.
